Alpha: The Chronicle of an Era Torn Apart by AIDS
This year, Julia Ducournau comes back with a moving film. The plot revolves around Alpha, a 13-year-old girl living with her mother, who is quite a troubled teen. When she comes home from a party with a tattoo, a seemingly insignificant act, it feels like a shockwave for her family. In this film, set between the 1980s and 1990s, Julia Ducournau introduces a fictional pandemic that is clearly reminiscent of AIDS. Alongside the single mother played by Golshifteh Farahani, there is another key character: Amin, Alpha’s uncle, who has contracted the virus. The director gave the role to Tahar Rahim, who underwent a radical physical transformation. After losing almost 20 kilos, the actor made a memorable appearance during the promotion of the biopic “Monsieur Aznavour”, revealing his impressive weight loss. Julia Ducournau continues to explore the mutations of the body, especially during adolescence.
During the red carpet and the press junket, we met Leïla Bekhti, Juliette Binoche, Julia Ducournau, Emma Mackey and many others.
