The History of Sound: A Tale of American Music

Cannes

It is 1917, Boston: Lionel and David, two students at the Boston Conservatory, it’s love at first sight. They were brought together by their passion for music, and the First World War is barely an obstacle to their romance, which we follow over several decades. The two men meet again in Maine and decide to record the lives, voices and folk songs of their compatriots. Their story unravels as the history of American music unfolds before the spectators’ eyes, in a sentimental tale full of nostalgia and brought to life by the touching chemistry between Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. Olivier Hermanus has succeeded in creating a poetic and powerful adaptation of Ben Shattuck’s eponymous short story. During the various events surrounding the screening at the Cannes Film Festival, we met Paul Mescal, Hadley Robinson, Olivier Hermanus, Alison Bartlett, among others.
